Care, Community and Hope Films 2024 – 1

Film 1 – Maria Huber Gymnasium School, Italy – Three Little Words

Languages: German, Italian, English

It all started with three little words: Community, Care and Hope, socio-political issues that matter and concern all of us. But everybody has a different idea about what they mean to them. An important current issue also in Italy that we thought about was the aging population because older people are often neglected. We decided to go out into the community and get to know some people in the local old people’s home, exchange stories and see what these three little words meant to them. But it’s also about our own personal perspective. After lots of brainstorming, discussing, drawing, translating and writing we started to fit the pieces together. In our film you’ll meet the different people who make up our community. You will meet a girl called Maria from Italy who will tell you a story. You will enter the care home and see what we did. You will hear all this in our 5 languages. Our class, a community in itself started with 3 little words and put many pieces to create our film.

Based on the French song “On écrit sur les murs” (“We write on the walls”), the children thought about what they would write on the walls for future generations to read. The four French year 9 classes worked in small groups on their own films. Students were free to decide on the themes and ways of producing. This year we also had some after school sessions where students could work on their films with a teacher and a Sixth Form student. They tackled a range of topics around the theme: homelessness, sports, simple acts of kindness, therapy dogs, friendship, languages and cultures, etc. Here are some of the best ones …

Film 6 – Europa School UK – Hope

Languages: Catalan, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, English

If you dreamt of an ideal world, what would you dream of?  What would be different?  We thought about why hope matters.  What would Hope look like if we met her?  What might she change?  We had lots of ideas because we made the film together; it wouldn’t have worked without each other.  One of us wrote a poem, whilst watching butterflies one day.  From that poem we made Art with clay, painting, collage and flying feathers.  We used freeze frame drama, improvisation, puppetry, dialogues and animation. We care about Nature and we want others to feel the same.
