Our Planet Films 2023 – Page 1

Film 1 – Europa School UK – Nuestras Raíces – Our Roots

Languages: Spanish, English, with a word or two of Russian, Slovak, Polish, Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese

Our film is about roots of trees and our own heritage roots.  Through art we explored roots in nature using charcoal, watercolour, printing, collage and sculpture.  We painted pictures with language, writing haikus about tree roots with similes and metaphors.  Then we discovered more about our own roots in drama, by asking our communities for stories.  Our class connections spread to 26 countries! Our languages have connections between them too. We made this film using our art and poetry. We hope it will inspire you to protect roots everywhere, deep in this planet of yours.

Film 2 – Herz Jesu Institut, Italy – Wurzeln Radici Roots

Languages: German, South Tyrolean dialect, Italian, Ladin, Latin, Albanian, English, Spanish and Polish

The film is a reflection on our roots. Where do we come from? Where does our language come from? What am I good at and how can I express myself? Where is my expression rooted in? What are the roots in nature? How can we get to the root of a problem? We also investigated the use of the noun and verb “root” in languages that are spoken in our school.

Film 3 – Haberdashers’ Hatcham Free School, UK – Unser Planet, Unsere Stadt, Unser Baum: Our Planet, Our City, Our Tree

Languages: German and English

Inspired by the opening of the film Wall-E and the story Edward und der Letzte Baum (The Last Tree in the City), Year 4 thought about the environmental impact we have on the cities we live in. Which cities are important to us? How would we describe them? How do green spaces and nature make us feel? What environmental problems do these cities face and how can we encourage nature and the green spaces that are so important to us?

Film 4 – Kamares Primary School, Cyprus –  SOSE² – Save Our Sad Environment

Languages: Greek and English

The aphorisms were developed after students saw photos connected with wise sayings. Each student then brought an object to inspire them to write lyrics/quotes about planet earth (environment, nature, people, behaviour). Then they tried to write a quote looking at their object and connecting it with real life. Students had the opportunity to transform their quotes. They also chose a hero that would narrate their quote (Playmobil, doll, shell, teddy bear etc). The students also read quotes of well-known Greek poets such as Odysseus Elytis, ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle and others such as Einstein, Tolstoy etc. Finally, the scenario of their film consisted of 21 philosophical quotes in relation to nature, mother Earth, peoples’ attitudes towards the environment and animals all placed in a specific order by the students.

Film 5 – Sydney Chinese School, Australia – We can protect our environment

Languages: Cantonese and English

The main character Zoey lives in a suburb near the mountains of Sydney and enjoys the sense of freedom in the natural environment. One day, she went to a forest that she has never been to, and met a kangaroo, platypus, koala, and kookaburra. Sadly, human actions destroyed their habitat, and left them without a home. A small act can go a long way for nature. For example, making sure you take away, properly dispose, and categorise your trash, refuse to use disposable products, and put out the fire after barbecuing. We can all begin with the little things in our daily lives to protect the environment!

Film 6 – Europa School, UK – Nous ne sommes pas seuls – We are not alone

Class 5FE has been looking for animal traces next to their classroom. They set up a wildlife camera and fed the animals to attract them at night. What they didn’t realise was that the animals were also watching them…
