Film 26 – Taoyuan Municipal Wuling Senior High School, Taiwan – The Smell in Our Memories
Languages: Mandarin, Taiwanese, English
Our video dives into the lives of military villagers of Taiwan. They were mainly retired soldiers who fought in the Chinese Civil War and retreated to Taiwan, where they devoted their lives to the community. With their contribution, the culture is enriched, and the villagers formed a unique bond which we think is the best definition of what home is. Uncle Chang represents the immigrant from the outside world, but he calls the place home and brings the food from his hometown. His neighbours become regular customers. After their homes are demolished for urbanization, a young man opens a store in honour of Uncle Chang. And the villagers can again taste the familiar food they used to have. That is what makes people think of home: the bond, the food, and the love.
