The International School of London (Surrey) strives to meet the diverse language needs of all students
Languages are at the heart of the ISL Surrey curriculum. All children, from age three till eighteen, have language lessons within the school day as part of the curriculum. Students study either in their mother tongue language or, if they are English-speakers, pursue French or Spanish lessons. Language and classroom teachers work together to ensure that concepts and vocabulary taught in the main classroom are reinforced in the language classes.
Currently there are 18 languages (*) taught, with more languages added as new students join the school. In addition, students who are new to English receive extensive English as an Additional Language support. The languages programme extends to the parent community, who are also offered the opportunity to study English once a week. This allows parents, who are new to the UK and to English, to quickly integrate into the school and local community.
The school offers the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the International Baccaleaurate (IB) in secondary school. These curricula aim to develop students who are internationally minded and able communicators in at least two languages. Multilingualism is recognised as an asset, which is nurtured and valued as a tool for learning.
* Languages currently offered: Arabic, Danish, Afrikaans, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, Turkish, Italian, Croatian, Romanian, Russian, Urdu, Swedish, Portuguese.
