Corelli College is London’s First Co-operative Academy and opened in September 2011. We are independent; we do not have a sponsor but were invited to become an academy by the government because of the proven record of success of our staff and senior team.
We provide an education for 11-19 years olds based on strong commitment to excellence, high achievement and a set of values which develops our students as responsible citizens and leaders. These values underpin the code of conduct which all students are expected to follow and which emphasises taking responsibility for yourself and helping others. Our student leaders organise events as well as participating in college decision making. Students are also given opportunities to work in the community. For example, our philosophy leaders have worked with university lecturers to run philosophy workshops in local primary schools.
Having no sponsor means we can develop a distinctive curriculum specifically designed to teachstudents the skills they need for independent success, while also matching the needs of local businesses and the community that we serve. Our status as a co-operative means we are aligned to the wider co-operative movement of organisations that are run by their members and as a result can draw on this worldwide network for support and inspiration. We also work in partnership with a number of schools, colleges and organisations creating an added dimension to our work.
This includes collaborations with The Greenwich Theatre, The Ideas Foundation and The Institute of Education (a part of The University of London). The college has strengths throughout the curriculum and we aim to instil pride in our students by integrating them with their environment so they understand the importance of the success story they are creating, both personally and as an active member of the community. The college has a reputation for the creative output of our Arts & Drama departments and is home to Kidbrooke Theatre Company @ Corelli College. Our philosophy of challenging students across the curriculum has led to many milestones that even some mainstream theatre companies cannot boast – these include numerous awards and accolades at the Edinburgh Festival, national tours and performances at The National Theatre, The Riverside Studios and Greenwich Theatre.
